We are proud to be able to use the power of Rotary’s connections together, to support Yimba Uganda, in their social enterprise to educate young people to learn a trade, equipping young people in Uganda with sustainable income generating skills.

Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world, with young people making up the highest percentage of the population, the majority of which are unemployed.

In many of their rural communities there is little access to running water, and electricity, housing is made from mud, sticks and a thatched roof. Like many places worldwide, young people if idle will turn to anti-social behaviour and drinking to pass the time.

Through this exciting Yimba Uganda program, youth in rural communities will not only receive vocational training, they will also receive an income from their labour.

Our club and the Rotary Club of Celle (Rotary District 1800) helped kickstart an exciting new project last year.

The two clubs provided funding to enable Yimba Uganda to purchase brickmaking machinery to create and train locals in this rural Ugandan community (Kakooge) to make interlocking, environmentally friendly bricks.

This bricks enable not only a quicker build and cost effective construction, but they are stronger and more durable than the mud and stick alternative, plus provide a much cleaner and neater finish.

The St Leonard's College Interact Club ran their first international project in 2022. With their “Buy-a-Brick” campaign in December – they raised funds from a bake sale and the St Leonard’s Community Day Fair, raising a total of $1,788!

The Interact Club has been able to multiply their fundraising efforts, with matching donations from the Rotary Club of Celle (Germany) and Rotary Club of Brighton which will be donated to Yimba Uganda to now purchase approximately 11,000 bricks.
