RCB Bulletin Thursday 7 March 2024
President's Message

Dear Club Members,

At last week's meeting we had great presentations from Jo Kwok with her students who attended the National Youth Science Program (NYSF) in January speaking about their experiences. (See some highlights and photos below). Also PP Peter Johns, one of the two remaining Charter Members of our Club who with wife Karen presented a great pictorial of their travels by barge around Europe via the canals (also see highlights below). A big thank you to them all and to Charter Member PP Rob Tucker who in a very loud shirt did a great job as Chairman.

As we approach the registration cutoff date for District 9800 Conference in Bendigo from the 12th to the 14th of April, I urge each and every one of you to consider attending this event. With just a few weeks left until bookings close on Monday, March 25th, I urge to seize the opportunity and secure your spot today.

Having participated in numerous Rotary Conferences over the years, I can attest to their profound impact in reinforcing the essence of Rotary. They serve as a powerful reminder that Rotary transcends our weekly meetings in Brighton; it embodies a dynamic force for change, community service, and fellowship.

This Conference is not just about sessions and speeches; it is a vibrant tapestry of Rotary in action. It's a platform to witness the inspiring initiatives undertaken by other Clubs, explore new avenues for service, and forge meaningful connections with fellow Rotarians.

You will find the complete agenda and speaker lineup on the District 9800 Conference website, along with a Rotary Showcase brimming with innovative projects and ideas. And let's not forget the invaluable fellowship that awaits us throughout the event.

If you're thinking of joining us, simply visit the Conference Website at www.trybooking.com/CMCUD to secure your place.

Let's come together in Bendigo to celebrate Rotary's impact and chart a course for even greater achievements ahead.

Finally, and closer to home, next week in fact - I'm looking forward to Thursday’s meeting where Anne Holland and the Team from Community First Responders Australia will talk on the potentially lifesaving topic on the who, why, when how & what of sudden cardiac arrest and bystander use of a defibrillator with Q&A. This is such an important message and the talk and the practical demonstrations you will see may well assist you save a life. I hope to see you all on Thursday 7 March.

Jo Kwok & Students who attended NYSF

Jo brought to the meeting 4 students from Melbourne Montessori School who our Club supported in attending the National Youth Science Forum in January this year in Canberra. Members or their family were present as they spoke of their experiences.

Typical of their recollections were:

"The NYSF was probably the best 9 days of my life and that is the first time I have said that about anything. Thank you so much for the funding. We made so many memories from going to the most inspiring lectures which gave me far more clarity on my future, to staying up late and making the most amazing friends."

Nathan Stanford

"I definitely agree with Nathan. NYSF was one of the most incredible experiences of my life - both in terms of the actual science side of things, where we got to visit world-class institutes and receive talks and lectures from STEM experts, but we also met so many amazing people, and made friends for life. Thank you again for all of your help, we honestly can't thank you enough!"

Anastasia Zaytseva

"When January came around and I flew to Canberra to attend the NYSF I was super excited! We stayed at the dorms in ANU and all 250 student participants got to meet and mingle. I found that meeting other STEM-passionate students was a key part of the experience because I got a chance to discuss issues, our futures and make life-long friends. I also got the opportunity to meet a lot of STEM professionals who I had the chance to speak to directly and ask questions. One of my favourite memories would have to be the people I met and experiencing the NYSF together, we still keep in touch and talk often.
