Our last meeting on 11 September was a joint one with the Rotary Club
of Brighton North at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club for the
District Governor’s night.
DG Peter Shepheard spoke on the many activities under way in the District and encouraged clubs to join together for projects, as in this joint meeting night. “Don’t be too fussy about District boundaries, just do it”.
He updated members on the Regionalisation Project - a mixed success - and there will be a meeting shortly to improve the model. Members encouraged him to think of making the whole of Victoria, if not Australia,
one District.
Talking about membership, he asked for hands up for the length of time members had spent in Rotary. When he got to 40+, Rob Nicholes (45 years) and David Smyth (41 years) still had their hands up. Descending
on them, he asked David about his motive for joining Rotary. David said
that was quite simple: “Rob Nicholes told him to.”
Rob said it was so long ago, he’d forgotten.
Guests for the meeting were Phillip Archer (District), Kate Strain (ex Brighton North) Yvette Ward, Suzie Leary, Marion Nicholes and Nadine Udorovic and Jordyn Malone (guests of David Smyth). Apologies to anyone missed from this list.
The reason there was no meal choice on the TryBooking website was discovered: there was no need. It was fish, fish and fish.
In the photos above: DG Peter asked those people on District roles
this year, or had held District Roles in the past to come forward
for a group photo.

The Power of an Auction

Last Sunday PP Ivan Vojlay attended an Auction at the premises of Amanda Addams Auctions in North Road, Ormond. He had not been to an auction for several years and was pleasantly surprised at the number of items to be auctioned (554).
The photo is of auctioneer and Club Member PE David Frauman, sporting a Rotary Club of Brighton cap.
The range of goods offered was also quite extensive, from ceramic figures, lamps, furniture, coins, silver cutlery sets, silver collectables, rugs, paintings, bronzed garden sculptures, and paintings. It was a perfect mixture of goods available, and something for everyone.
With the number of goods involved, it was certainly a long day; however, we had the opportunity to view the goods the day before, on Saturday. To Ivan, there was an opportunity to pick up a bargain, as the items were snapped up at reasonable prices. There were a couple of surprises, one was a Persian Isfahan Kork wool and silk inlay handmade rug, and the other a Patek Philippe Grand Celestial II gold dome clock, where bidding was fierce from the audience, and especially online.
The auction proved interesting and some fun, and Ivan said he treasured the items that he purchased.
The next Auction is on 2 November 2025.
