Vale PP Geoff Smith

It is with great sadness that we advise of the passing recently of former member PP Geoff Smith.

Geoff was Club President in the 1979/80 year, although not a RCB member for some years, long terms club members will recall him as an active Rotarian involved in many club activities including the clubs inaugural Big Bay Run, first held in June 1980.

Our thoughts are with Geoff's family.

A summary of Tim's talk about AI

TIC Prompting Framework, AI Productivity Divide,
National Security and Education Impacts

In his talk Tim explained how to use AI effectively via the TIC framework - Task, Instructions Context - to markedly improve output quality and workplace productivity. Tim described a growing productivity divide in technology companies between employees who use AI well and those who do not, with some achieving 60–80x productivity compared to the average 2–4x. Tim also covered societal, economic, and infrastructural implications: protests against data centres due to energy, water, and community impacts; spectrum congestion from AI-driven requests; disruption of white-collar, process-heavy roles; and the expectation that AI will augment rather than replace jobs, potentially fuelling an explosion of small businesses. National security considerations focus on frontier model leadership by the United States and the People’s Republic of China, raising questions about Australia’s sovereign capacity versus dependency. In education, Tim stressed that the scarcity of wisdom and judgment in an era of abundant processing and knowledge, debating how to teach critical thinking amid AI’s “critical thinking calculator” effect. As of 2026-08-06, Tim remains cautiously optimistic, advocating deliberate, step-by-step integration and technology literacy to navigate disruption.

The source of this copy comes from a recording by PP Robert Ward of Tim's talk on the night which was then processed through AI to produce the text for this Summary.
