Stuart Rodney’s update on the Mayflower story was well told by on Thursday night. As I mentioned, Mayflower has been supported by our Club for decades - including Board representation, financial support and the substantial volunteering by friends and family of Rotary - such as Judee Stevenson and daughter Nicole Porrit. It was a great story.
Last Thursday night we welcomed new member Damien Louis who is an ophthalmologist. I do hope that you all introduce yourselves to Damien and make her feel really welcome.
We also presented PDG Dale Hoy with a Paul Harris 3 sapphires award in acknowledgement of his support to Rotary Foundation.
I was thinking the other day that my Rotary year is supposed to be winding down as planning is already well underway for the Changeover. Then I went through my calendar - it transpires May and June will be a busy period Rotary wise; just look at the activities.
May activities:
Mock Interviews at Brighton Secondary School
Three heats of Bayspeak
Brighton Lunch on 17th May

Guess who’s coming to dinner.
A joint meeting with Brighton North
June activities:

Final of the Rotary D9800 public speaking Competition at Parliament House

And I am sure there are others!!.
This week we have Issi Dye as our speaker - a wonderful entertainer.

2024 St Leonard’s College Interact Club
Congratulations to the 2024 St Leonard’s College Interact Club Executive Board who recently received their badges at the St Leonard’s College middle school assembly! Gisele, Melanie, Elise, Liv and Mia have been selected to lead this year’s Interact members. Jo Kwok, the Rotary Club of Brighton’s Director (Youth & Vocational Services) proudly presented these young leaders on behalf of the Club.
The Rotary Club of Brighton provide guidance and mentoring to the St. Leonard’s Interact Club and are looking forward to supporting them with a range of projects to make a difference this year. Interact Club members have the opportunity to carry out service/social action projects and develop leadership skills to make positive change.
The St Leonard’s College Interact Club was only started 2.5 years ago, and the members have been able to get involved with some fun and meaningful initiatives that have a made a difference locally and internationally.
With the Buy A Brick campaign, they helped raise $10,000 US Dollars (in conjunction with Rotary Club of Celle and Rotary Club of Brighton) which enabled a Yimba Uganda* to buy a brick making machine, and hand make 20000+ bricks which the students then used to build a new classroom while learning new vocational skills through Yimba Uganda’s social enterprise.
They were also involved in supporting a local social enterprise at the RAW Garden in Brighton East in a hands project & together created a sensory garden of Australian native pollinator friendly plants and is a new home for 50,000 bees through the Club’s BeeLIVE project.
Last year they created social connection with disadvantaged members of Bailey House with a regular Music & Morning Tea each week.
They also ran a fun ForAMeal Packing Day where the social action students from middle and senior school got hands on packing 15000+ nutritionally balanced meals that went to flood affected areas in the Phillipines and the frontlines in the Ukraine. Article Jo Kwok
