RCB Bulletin Thursday 27 February 2025
Message from the President

Great to have the Ms Zoe Daniel, MP for Goldstein at last week's meeting and she spoke about being an Independent in Parliament. It was good to get her insights into her background and how that plays a major part in her decision making across policy and her life in general.

Nice to also have DG Michael Lapina and son Alex and incoming DG Peter Shepheard in attendance. Alex Lapina and Peter are both Presidents of Rotary clubs.

Congratulations were in order for David Frauman. The club’s Nominating Committee has proposed David as our President Elect for 2026/27. His role will be confirmed at a Special Meeting scheduled for 20 March.

We also had sponsored students Ulyana and Eli share their amazing experience at the 2025 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF).

Anthony announced the apologies and they were:
Brendan Kierce, Di Allan, PP Pat Kearns, PP Des Thomas,
PP Norm Thomas & Angela Biggin.

Anne Holland
Anne encouraged all of our members to scan the social media QR on the form provided on the tables & follow/like the Brighton Classic Car Show.  Exhibitors and visitors to BCCS will be invited to post their photos/videos & comments on FB and Instagram. The more members/friends that follow the SM, the greater the online presence
and awareness of the event.

Colleen d'Offay
Colleen said that there would be a Club Survey sent out shortly
asking members various questions to fill out.  The Surveys wiil provide the 2025-2026 Club’s Board with an objective and non-intimidating way to gauge member perspectives and, most importantly, to help make informed decisions based on data rather than intuition, personal opinions, or informal discussions.

Jo Kwok

Jo spoke about donating our recycling refunds and said we can help the Rotary Club of Brighton make a difference with local community projects. There was a banner produced and ReturnIT cards on the table. For more information please contact Jo or Stuart McIntyre.

Max Martin

Max mentioned that he had copies of the 2024-2025 Member's Directory with him at $5 a copy and we were to come and see him after the meeting if they wanted a copy.

Students speak about experiences at 2025 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF)

Chaired by Jo Kwok we had sponsored students Ulyana and Eli talk to us at last week's meeting and they shared their amazing experiences at the 2025 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF).

Ulyana speaks about her experience

"I first heard about it at the end of 2023 when my school's career counsellor shared a newsletter with all senior schools. Only in my first week of year 11 commencement, I had no idea of the life-changing experience this would soon come to be.
In 2024, when it was my time to apply for the program, it was all I could think about and when it was finally time to submit my application I was petrified that I wouldn’t make the cut, but in June of that year, in the middle of English class, I received an email informing me of my acceptance into the program. I was so delighted with the news that I had to step out of class to compose myself!
It has always been a dream of mine to pursue studies in STEM. In primary school I wanted to be a Vet, in high school, this shifted towards the hopes of becoming a Dentist and now I am quite definitely aiming to become a research scientist in the field of Biochemistry.
NYSF helped me not only solidify my understanding of the tertiary pathways available to me. We started our visits with chemistry labs, a herbarium tour, and a classified food science lab excursion, followed by CSIRO robotics workshops and beginner computer science classes at QUT.
I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who helped get me one step closer to achieving my dreams. Thank you for the support, I would not be where I am now without your contributions."
