RCB Bulletin Thursday 26 September 2024
At last week's meeting we will heard from Andrew Monotti who is the Chairman of the Brighton Beach Bathing Box Association and has been a Partner at King & Wood Mallinsons for many years. He spoke about the history of the bathing boxes and the various problems that the licencees face every now and again including vandalism, storm surges, erosion and tourists. There are 96 bathing boxes and 88 members of the Association. It was a very interesting talk and appreciated by the attendees of the meeting. VP Ian Stacy presented Andrew with a gift in appreciation of his talk.  We look forward to see those attending the dinner at the Akaba Japanese Restaurant tonight.

Exchange Student Award
Congratulations to Mariah Porto

On Wednesday, 18 September, Brighton Secondary College hosted its inaugural Sports Presentation Evening, celebrating top athletes excelling in their respective sports. The awards spanned a variety of disciplines, including AFL, soccer, tennis, swimming, netball, basketball, frisbee (yes, frisbee is a sport!), and volleyball.
One standout moment was when Mariah, our exchange student, received the only award for volleyball. The twist? She plays on the boys' team, where her skills still outshone her teammates.
To my knowledge, RCB has never had an exchange student receive
such recognition before. Well done, Mariah!!

My Exciting Activities in September

Report from Eam
Cambodian student that our Club is sponsoring

Hello Colleen and the Members of the Rotary Club of Brighton,

How are you doing? I hope everything goes well with you.
Welcome to September and I am glad to share with you about what I have been involved with this month. Let me share about my time joining the Street library, planting trees, joining the new student selection in CRST and Mission to Preah Vihear with Rotaract Club of Siem Reap.

I am excited that I have a chance to share a wonderful activity with you that our club did by installing our second street library in the village at Tapang. In the early of September, we went to Tapang and officially installed the street library for students in areas to have the opportunity to read more. Before taking books to put in the library, we started to have some funny games playing with all the students. Our game was passing things through with music and when it stopped, they had to answer. All of the questions were related to reading books. We enjoyed this game together and everyone wearing smile for that funny with educational purpose’s game. After that, we started to divide as a group for reading. I was selected to be a leader for one group gathering for reading books and shared with other students after finishing. I was delighted to spend my time with children and explain to them the meaning of reading books, the effective way of reading and how it is important. We spent around 20 minutes reading a short book, then we shared it with our team. I asked if they would like to share what they have read to other groups or not. And one of the students in my group, she would like to share. She talked confidently with inspired other group members. Not only her but other students from each group also came to share as well. I was so impressed to see a lot of involvement from students and I could see their passion in reading books. This is so wonderful that young students like me and others can contribute to our community. I felt so much appreciated everyone’s time and effort to join hands helping those children to get to read more.

At the beginning of the month, we joined with Project T for planting trees along the road in the Siem Reap city. It was a sublime event with the purpose of developing the city and creating the sight of unity from people to understand the importance of the environment and start to plant trees. CRST students and I came to the tank early and prepared the place before we started the event. There were many people joining such as students from public school, private school, police, partners and also supporters as well. I was delighted to join planting trees because I can help my community and also meet other new people as well. I enjoyed that activity a lot because during planting trees we shared a lot of things together as well as sharing our ideas of the importance of planting trees. This was so wonderful that we could change our perspectives.

Besides that, I have joined the NSS department for selecting new students. I have learned a lot from this mission because it is very practical to use what I have learned in school to apply to what we do and also, we have to observe the situation of students’ families. I enjoyed this mission so much because I could improve myself even using English and Khmer words politely and professionally for interviewing students. I learned to be more flexible for different attitudes depending on situations that I was involved in. My team and I work specifically in PUOK but candidates are not only from PUOK so we travel to different areas. I love traveling so much and I also enjoyed food in the countryside as well because I could taste different kinds of food and flavour.

Recently, I went on a mission with the Rotaract Club of Siem Reap to Preah Vihear province. This mission also includes a trip to our club as well. We divided each other to do the workshop and also provide materials. I was a leader of 1 group which we focused on Project G Empowering Girls mission. Firstly, I was so amazed by the teachers there who have passion in teaching and also gave us a warm welcome and appreciation. They came to pick us up by walking tractor and it was very far from the place where we parked the bus. We had to take a walking tractor and continue with the ferry and then continue with the walking tractor again. Once we arrived, we prepared to distribute Solar Buddy, study materials, cotton bags as well as bringing our menstrual hygiene Kits for students and villagers there too. It was an unforgettable moment that we could make this wonderful distribution for people in Preah Vihear. There were students and many villagers came to join us on that day. I was so excited to see every smile of students when they joined our sharing. There were milestone achievements that I joined to make a difference for students, inspiring them to continue their education and provide the best solutions for people to take care of their period and stay healthy. This was just so amazing for me to be a part of helping people. Furthermore, we also have a chance to visit Preah Vihear temple as well. That was so nice and memorable for me.

This is all from me and I hope to hear from you too.

Best Regards, Eam
