This week's meeting:
Thursday 14 September
Professor Peter Doherty
Nobel Prize Winner
President’s weekly message
The weekend started on Friday evening when I received the following message from our Hon member Alex Spear in recognition of our approaching 50th Birthday:
“It gives me great pleasure to extend my Congratulations to the members of the Brighton Rotary Club. From the early days of Fun Runs to the wonderful of Ladies Lunch shows the tremendous growth the Club has made in 50 years. Well done members. There is no doubt that Brighton is the best Rotary Club in the district. Enjoy your day.”
Then later in the evening the mighty Carlton Blues won against Sydney - the weekend was looking good. Unfortunately, Carlton’s performance wasn’t able to inspire my golf performance at Hacker’s on Saturday morning. Oh well, there is always next week.

On more serious issues, our speaker seeker Tom Buxton recently sent out a message on attendance which is also one of my major concerns. There is a wonderful group that attends virtually every week and strongly appreciated, and I know other members are contending with health issues making attendance a major challenge and of course this is the travel season. However, I do ask that members try and make as many meetings as they can in the months ahead. As always, I am always happy to hear suggestions of what more we can do to further improve our meetings. I am happy to try anything, even wear a Tupeno (Tongan grass skirt) during my Member Behind the Badge talk as some of you were lucky enough to witness last Thursday. Narina gave us a wonderful presentation as well.
This week should be big as we have a wonderful speaker Professor Peter Doherty, so if you can support, please do so.
On other Rotary matters, great news on the National Youth Science Forum to be held in January. The program is aimed at high performing STEM students, and thanks to Jo’s organising and the interviewing effort of Stuart McMillan, Angela Biggin and Marion Nicholes, four students have been selected to attend – two to Canberra and two to Brisbane. The NYSF is an excellent program, so well done to the selected students, and we will have them talk to the Club in the New Year.
Finally, the Presidential Selection Committee has met to identify a suitable Presidential nominee to follow Narina. We expect to announce the candidate later in the week.
Have a great week, and I hope to see you all on Thursday.
President Arthur Hubbard
Narina's Member Behind the Badge
Narina talked about her life so far. Where she was born in UK from Greek parents etc and also a weird day she had on her holiday last year, snorkelling in the Silfra Fissure in Iceland. The Silfra Fissure is a water-filled crack between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, where the two continents drift apart appoximately 2cm each year. It’s located in Thingvellir National Park, the site of Iceland's parliament from the 10th to 18th centuries. The rift was formed in 1789 by earthquakes and is filled with glacial meltwater from the nearby Langjökull glacier which she also visited twice on her trip. The water filters through porous underground lava for 30-100 years before reaching the spring that feeds into Silfra. It’s so pure and allows for underwater visibility of about 120m. It’s like floating above a cathedral and being about to see all the way to the floor.

Prize money for the finals will now be:
