RCB Bulletin Thursday 28 March 2024
President's Message

Dear Club Members,

I was privileged to attend the Bayside Council's Community Awards last Wednesday where Rotary members and family were among the nominations for various Community awards. This included the Young Bayside Community Leader of the year, which was won by Amelie Taylor, who happens to be
the daughter of Jo Kwok. PP Ian Mence was one of the nominations for the Bayside Senior Citizen of the Year, and Brighton Rotary’s Bayside Art Show Committee represented by PP Norm Thomas was one of the nominations for the Community Event of the year. Whilst Ian and the Art Show did not get over the winner’s line, it was still great that they were recognised. Personally, I think the Art Show was dudded, as in my opinion it was the biggest and best of the named events. However I do confess I may be a little biased. Anyway, congratulations to Amelie for her win and Ian, and the Bayside Art Show for well-deserved nominations.

I hope those who attended last Thursday's meeting were able to go back in time enjoying hearing of stories of the founding of Brighton from speakers Jenny Raper and Jill Harbrow from the Brighton Historical Society, especially about Henry Dendy and J B Were. I know I certainly did and it was really interesting information.

We also welcomed and inducted a new member Alexandra Florea, who had previously been a visitor to our club. Alexandra is married with two young children, and lives in Stone Street, East Brighton. She is an architect by profession, has a PhD from Deakin in Architecture. Previous undergrad studies and Masters of architecture and urban planning completed in Romania. She should be a great addition to our Club.

Friday was also a big day  the Ivan’s Hackers group had its annual golf day competing against the WAGS, the competition dubbed the Hackers versus the Hookers, and as par for the course, the ladies were the clear winners.
Oh well, there is there is always next year. At least there was some sporting
consolation during the week, namely Collingwood losing its third game in
a row.

That’s all from me folks, I hope you have a safe and enjoyable Easter - the timing means no Rotary Meeting this Thursday, so you can all have the night off. Hope to see all of you on Thursday week.

President Arthur Hubbard

Secretaries Announcements

Secretary Nicole Chong presented her segment.

Apologies were:

John Schmoll, PP Alan Pinkus, Brendan Kierce, PP Norm Thomas,
Max Martin, David Frauman, Malcolm James, Eric Barr, Keith Cameron, Ian Hall and Colleen d'Offay

Jo Kwok:
Jo spoke about that they are seeking volunteers for the Brighton Secondary Mock Interviews (May 8 & 15) and also the 2024 Science and Engineering Challenge at Deakin Burwood (June 25 & 26). If anyone is interested in volunteering some time for these (or any Youth Services events), please contact Jo on youth@brightonrotary.com.au

Wayne Styles:
Wayne spoke about the successful Brighton Classic Car Show and said that
he had the pleasure and support of an amazing team that put together the event and that 55 Rotarians, friends and family worked over the weekend and without their support it would not have happened. The revenue was up on last year and the surplus may be around 10% extra. We managed to have 132 classic cars on the oval [last year 121] and that is absolute maximum, we also turned away 5 cars who hadn’t entered. Finally we also had an increase of approximately 10% more public attending.

(The photos below were taken by Jo Kwok. Last week's Bulletin showed PP Ivan Vojlay's photos of the event. Big thanks go to especially Ivan & Jo for their great work.)

Bayside Council Community Awards Evening
Some of our Rotary Club of Brighton members were invited to attend the 2024 Bayside Community Awards at the Sandringham Yacht Club, to celebrate some amazing volunteer contributors and events in our local community. Congratulations to PP Ian Mence OAM for his nomination for Senior Citizen of the Year, to the Bayside Art Show (PP Norm Thomas and Committee) for their nomination for Community Event of the Year and to Amelie Taylor for receiving the 2024 Young Citizen of the Year Award (for her volunteering, social action and fundraising contributions).

Don't forget!
There are a limited number of reprints of the RCB History book for sale at $20. Ask Max Martin at a meeting if you wish to purchase. Also Anthony has copies of the Member's Directory for $5 which he will bring to the meetings.

Kids headed off for this weekend’s RYPEN camp

The Rotary Club of Brighton are proud to be able to support young people to participate in personal/leadership opportunities. This weekend young people (15-17 year olds) from across Victoria are heading to Malmsbury for the iconic RYPEN Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment weekend camp. The Rotary of Brighton in conjunction with North Brighton and Port Phillip Rotary Clubs will this weekend be supporting 14 students from Brighton Secondary College, McKinnon Secondary College, Star of the Sea and MacRobs to attend. Pictured here is the before shot - when they’re all excited but nervous.
