RCB Bulletin Thursday 12 September 2024
It was good to be back at the helm last week and we welcomed some members we hadn't seen for a while plus guest Hatice Basarin. We heard from special guest speaker Peter Cook who spoke about International Maritime Security. Peter has worked with intergovernmental agencies (UNODC & IMO), flag and port States, international shipping associations and private maritime security providers. He spoke about the shipping problems of the world and especially the security issues that arise on a daily basis. It was a very informative talk which unfortunately was not backed by Peter's powerpoint presentation which was unable to operate. PP Cameron Ward is going to look into this and hopefully come up with a solution so we don't face this problem in future meetings. Thanks Cameron.

There is no meeting this week on 12 September but at the following week's meeting on Thursday 19 September we will hear from Andrew Monotti who is the Chairman of the Brighton Beach Bathing Box Association. For many years in the late nineteenth century, Brighton was Melbourne's favourite seaside destination. Bathing boxes and boatsheds are intrinsic to Port Phillip Bay and Western Port. The 82 Brighton bathing boxes are unique because of their uniform scale and proportion, building materials, sentry order alignment and a Planning Scheme Heritage Overlay on a beach owned by Bayside City Council. As simple structures, all retain classic Victorian architectural features with timber framing, weatherboards and corrugated iron roofs. They remain as they did over one hundred years ago, as licensed bathing boxes. No service amenities such as electricity or water are connected. Dendy Street Beach, Brighton is the home of the Brighton bathing boxes, a popular Bayside icon and cultural asset. Green Point is a popular viewing area for the Brighton bathing boxes, Brighton dunes and the Melbourne skyline. Andrew has been a Partner at King & Wood Mallinsons for many years. He will be known to number of our members who have or have had bathing boxes.

Don't forget to book for the Akaba Japanese Restaurant Fellowship Dinner which is coming up on Monday 23 September. Please support this event which Wendy Davis has worked hard to provide for our enjoyment.
