President’s weekly message
A great night last Thursday – it really is true, many of our members have had amazing experiences and are the best speakers. Bruce Crossley is no exception and he gave a great talk on his work in Australia, South America with smaller stints in a number of other developing countries. A colourful life indeed. Most members will have heard that Bruce is leaving us in three weeks, to initially head to Europe, then will be taking up residency in Beachport South Australia. I am assured however that recent rumours that he will be barracking for the Crows instead of the Dees are definitely rumours. We certainly hope so and we all wish Bruce and Deirdre all the best for their new adventure.

Thursday was also special as the Club made two presentations to BayCISS. The first was for $15,000 paid from the proceeds of the Great Australia Day Swim. As Stuart McIntyre was interstate, Keiran Cromie represented the GADS Team for the cheque presentation. The second payment was from Rotary Club of Brighton Charitable Trust, representing both members donations and part of the Trust Income. Rose Paduano and Janet Matheson spoke on BayCISS and how the Funds will be used – for the Educational Support Program started by our own Peter Sherman many years ago, Janet gave some wonderful examples of students who received benefit. Really makes our fundraising worthwhile.
Next week will be a little different, past member PP Michael Jess will be on the big screen all the way from Germany. Michael was a great member and continued to support our Club on his return to his native Germany.
The meeting will be complemented by our MUNA winners, Erik Kryparisis and Jensen Galvin from Brighton Grammar. I am told they really are special and articulate. I am really looking forward to hearing of their experiences.
Hope to see many of you there next week.
Meeting Highlights 17 August
Last week’s Raffle results:
The raffle last week was run by PP Julie Avery with help from Deirdre. The winners were: 1. Pres Arthur Hubbard. 2. Stephanie Hubbard.
Secretaries Announcements
Secretary Nicole Chong presented her segment and first up was the apologies.
They were: Stuart McIntyre, Glenys Hitchen and Felicity Cullen.
There were three announcements.
Stuart McMillan firstly spoke about National Youth Science Forum applications. He said we’ve had 4 applications and last Thursday Angela Biggin and himself conducted 3 impressive interviews. They still have 1 more to do and it is Club policy to do interviews on a two-up basis (one female RCB member and one Male RCB member). They can use partners if they have a current working with children card. If anyone is free next week please contact Stuart McMillan.
Stuart then mentioned the Rotary Club of Brighton 50-year celebrations and Rotary International’s priority No.1. The Rotary Club of Brighton are supporting Rotary International’s number one priority and celebrating our own 50th Birthday by accepting the End Polio challenge.
Polio is on the rise again in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ukraine, Ghana, Liberia, Madagascar, Senegal and Israel, its time for Rotary to mobilise globally and
end polio.
To meet the challenge, (RCB) are celebrating their 50th Anniversary by donating $50 per member to the Polio Plus Society. The Polio Plus Society has called on all member nations to donate $150 per member and become Society Members. Polio Plus Society members are registered on your Rotary International (RI) record and you are presented with a globally recognised certificate and pin.
Your club has started the process for you, all you have to do is
- log onto your “My Rotary” account, https://my.rotary.org/en/
- Click on the Donate button (top right),
- Select End Polio, scroll down to one-time-donation (select)
- Scroll down to Use your credit card to donate $100 (AUD)
In District 9800 we are the second largest donor, so with your help we can be first;
- become Polio Plus Society members
- Get a 100% tax deduction
- And help end this global disease
So don’t have that bottle of wine or meal at our regular meeting and give the equivalent to end polio via the Polio Plus Society donation.
If you don’t know your RI membership number ask Anthony Langley.
Geoff Cunningham spoke about the Winery trip on Sunday 27 August and you can still book. Please check the advert at the bottom of this Bulletin for booking details. Bookings close this Wednesday.
Rotary Youth Sailing Challenge September Opportunity
In May 2023, the Rotary Club of Brighton supported three young Bayside students to take on the Rotary Youth Sailing Challenge. This life changing experience enabled the young people to take on a very unique opportunity to sail from Adelaide to Melbourne on the tall ship the One and All.

Following the success of this voyage, Rotary District 9800 will offer an opportunity to students to join this adventure - sailing from Victoria Harbour, Docklands for a 4-day voyage on The Enterprize, a locally based tall ship, during the September school holidays. Students 15-17 years of age (at time of voyage) will have the opportunity to have a dynamic personal development experience, where lifelong skills are learnt through challenge and adventure. It is an intensive work and social experience, where trainees are presented with the challenge of acquiring skills needed to operate a Tall Ship, safely, at sea. Meeting these challenges conveys a sense of achievement and self-worth and lifelong friendships are formed.
The Enterprize can take 9 students, so places are extremely limited. Dates have just been released for 23rd September - 26th September. For any interested students, please get them to provide an expression of interest from Jo Kwok:
Jo.kwok@brightonrotary.com.au including contact details of parent/guardian by September 2nd. Students will also need to complete the online application forms.
