RCB Bulletin Thursday 15 August 2024
There was no meeting last week so I would concentrate on what the Club is doing
in between. Colleen d'Offay has provided an article on Donations in Kind Opening Day which was on Saturday 10 August (see below).
Also Maria HIcks is promoting Paws for Polio.

At this week's meeting we have not only Gabriel Ireland from RT Edgar Real Estate speaking to us but also Janet Matheson (BayCISS VP) will be coming along to get a cheque for $13k from our Charitable Foundation. The BayCISS Education Support Program, generously funded by the Rotary Club of Brighton, has been supporting local students since 2008 to remain in school. The program provides funding for school camps, uniforms, books, reading glasses, laptops, tutoring, special VCE resources, specialist classes and will consider anything that helps engage a student to successfully complete their education.

Educational opportunities are a vital factor in breaking intergenerational poverty and provide social inclusion and support systems for vulnerable children in Bayside. Over the past few months, the Education Support Fund helped ten students to participate in a school snow camp and two students to join a Murray River Journey. BayCISS assisted with assessments to identify students in need of this support in collaboration with the Welfare Team at Sandringham Secondary College.

The winter weather has also led to an increase in requests for assistance by BayCISS clients struggling to afford winter uniforms for their children. BayCISS continues to respond to local families needing support with the costs associated with education and gratefully acknowledges the ongoing significant support
of the Rotary Club of Brighton.

Don't forget to book for the Fazio Fellowship night on 19 August.
Should be great night.

Anyway that's all from me. I hope we get another good turn up this week and remember to bring your coins for PP Julie Avery's Sergeant's Session.

DIK Opening Day Highlights

Over 200 people from 44 clubs across 4 districts plus 24 non Rotarians
eg social workers, health, Government, attended the Opening Day on
Saturday 10 August. Below are some photo highlights.
A good turn out and everyone enjoyed the day.
Thanks to Colleen d'Offay and Leslie McCarthy for the story and photos.

Mobile Phone Re-Cycling Campaign

During August, the St Leonards Interact Club is collecting
and re-cycling used mobile phones, and has requested our Club’s support.

Phones in working order will be wiped, updated and distributed to BayCISS clients. The others will be re-cycled as scrap, with the proceeds donated to the Melbourne Zoo for animal conservation.

Members able to assist can leave donated phones a
t the Front Desk at our Club meeting on 15 August.

An invitation

As the result of a successful End Polio Fundraising walk last year with people and pets, Rotary Passport Melbourne has been asked to launch
End Polio month for D9800.

I am excited to share that PAWS FOR POLIO will take place this year on Sunday 6 October at Elsternwick Park. Participants can choose a short course around the dog park or begin their End Polio Month walk by a 5 or 10 km walk. Humans and 4 pawed walkers have plenty of choice.

We will be joined by Rotary Club of Balwyn North
who will be in charge of the BBQ/Sausages.

Walungurru School

A message from Tanith Margetson, Principal Walungurru School, Kinfore, Northern Territory to Colleen d'Offay DIK

"I’d love for you to share these photos to say thanks for the donated items -
I know it’s a long time after the delivery - but the items are having a lasting impact here in Walungurru. Some of the stretchy red fabric initially intended for ceremony was re-purposed to make hammocks, a cloud gymnastics swing, and a calming sensory pod to promote self-regulation throughout the school through vestibular (movement) and proprioceptive (deep pressure touch) input which had recently been recommended by allied health teams to support students with additional needs to remain calm.

Ever since we’ve used the fabric in this way we’ve noticed less students absconding from school, and more students able take a break, use the swings and then re-enter the classroom and re-engage with the learning. We’ve certainly had a lot of joy and many benefits
from the donations."

Kind regards, Tanith Margeston
