RCB Bulletin Thursday 23 November 2023

President’s weekly message

Members and guests who attended Thursday’s meeting were not disappointed. It (allegedly) took PP Tom Buxton seven years to get Bruce Wolpe to our meeting, but it was worth the wait. It was greatly assisted of course by being expertly chaired by David Finney.

Bruce provided gave compelling insights into the world of Donald Trump. Regardless of your personal views of DT, there's no denying his ability to capture the headlines. Bruce indicated the reasonable prospect of DT’s return as the US President in the next election. It's certainly an intriguing topic that sparks conversation!

On Rotary matters, I have just looked at my diary as the festive season approaches and I try to navigate through the remaining five weeks until Xmas. It’s fair to say there's a plenty of activities on the horizon namely:
  • Bayside Art Show:
Our much-anticipated Bayside Art Show is making a comeback this week after its COVID hiatus. Norm Thomas and the team are hard at work in their final preparations. Even if you can't make it to the Gala Opening night on Thursday 23 November, I encourage you to offer your assistance and take the time to visit the exhibit. The paintings are expected to be outstanding.

  • November 30th Meeting:
Mark your calendars for our packed meeting on the 30 November, featuring David Whiting, a lawyer, Radio commentator and a long-standing Rotarian. The meeting will be complemented by students from Brighton Secondary sharing their experiences in the Rotary Youth Sailing Challenges, as well as an update from Team Sports 4 All.

  • A FORaMEAL Packing Day:
Join us on Wednesday, 6 December, at St Leonards for our A FORaMEAL packing day. We need five volunteers with mandatory Working With Children certification for supervision. Reach out to Jo Kwok if you can lend a hand.

  • Bayside Family Christmas Event:
On Wednesday, 13 December, we have the Bayside Family Christmas Event. Again, contact Jo Kwok if you can attend or assist in this wonderful community project supporting vulnerable Bayside families.

  • Year-end Joint Meeting:
Our final meeting of the year on Thursday 7 December is a joint gathering with Brighton North Rotary Club at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club with Anne Ross, a local artist and sculptor as the guest speaker. Booking details to come.

  • Christmas party
The final event for the year is our annual Christmas Cocktail function on 10 December at the West Brighton Club. Save the date and book early as it promises to be a delightful way to get together and celebrate the close out the year.

A letter from the King family to RCB Members

Elaine King and family would like to thank all the Rotary Club of Brighton members for the friendship and fellowship shared with John W King over the many years that he has been a member of the Club.

Whilst we have been unable to talk with you all, our thanks are extended to you for your warm messages, cards and support following the passing of John on 13 October 2023. We are gratified and pleased that so many were able to attend the funeral on 23 rd October and especially thankful to Dale Hoy for the very personal and uplifting Eulogy. John would have been humbled.

As you know, the Rotary Club has been a very important part of John’s life reflected beautifully in the photos which Max Martin generously provided and used at his funeral.

The King Family

The Chairman has assured us that there will be plenty of chairs, tables and umbrellas available for this event.
