What a memorable evening we had last Thursday! The Issi Dye and Glenn Douglass Neil Diamond and Beatles tribute night received excellent reviews and was one of the social highlights of our Rotary year. Both performers were really entertaining, and the dance floor was buzzing with energy. Leading the dance moves was none other than Joy Laband, Ivan Vojlay, Glenys Hitchen closely followed by Alan Pinkus and our exchange student, Mariah. As for myself, well with my two left feet, I opted to enjoy the music from the sidelines rather than risk the dance floor.
Last Tuesday's Highlight - District Public School Speaking Grand Final
Tuesday was another standout moment - the District Public School Speaking Grand Final at State Parliament. This event featured top speakers from Bayspeak, Wynspeak, and RC Richmond’s Ainger Peck Public Speaking Awards, all competing for the title of best speaker. As expected, the standard of the speeches was outstanding, and the excitement among students and parents was palpable. Special thanks to James Newbury for making this event possible.
I am delighted to report our Bayspeak representatives shone, with Sanuli M from Mentone Girls Grammar taking out the top senior prize, and Carey T from Brighton Grammar securing the runner-up spot. The success of the evening has led to the decision to make this an annual tournament.
Update on the 2024/5 Presidency
A group of Past Presidents including Julie Avery, Rob Ward, Ian Stacy, and myself will be meeting on Monday to draft plans for the upcoming months. We are looking at a job-share model and will be organising rosters, roles, and activities. I'll keep you updated on our progress, so stay tuned!
Science and Engineering Challenge
This week, we have the Science and Engineering Challenge at Deakin University in Burwood, organised by Jo Kwok. I’m looking forward to see this event in action and then for Jo sharing details of this event as it progresses.
Changeover Update
Our planned “change-over” lunch is still happening but will be a celebration of the past year, including the presentation of our End of Year awards. If you haven’t booked yet, there’s still time, but don’t wait too long!
Venue Update
While we hoped to start the New Year in a new venue, plans have had to change as unfortunately, the two venues we were considering indicated they are not available at this stage. But fear not, the indomitableWendy Davis is on the case, and we may now have a solution.

Letter from Eam Hot, Active Member, Rotaract Club of Siem Reap
Hello Colleen and the Members of the Rotary Club of Brighton,
I trust you are doing well.
How have you been? Does everything go well with you and your work?
Welcome to a wonderful month of June. I am excited to share some updates on my studying and my work.
Recently, I joined a tax extra class which is run by my seniors. Her name is Samach. It is an interesting class that we learned about tax and also some accounting lessons. I spend every Saturday attending this exciting class. I learned a lot from Bong Samach and she allows me to do a lot of exercises in class where I could raise any concerns at the same time and I did some practice with assignments that she assigned for me and other students to do. And this morning, we had a test and I was happy that I could do it well from my observation when I compared the answer with others after the test. I am more than happy to attend this extra class, even some lessons I used to learn. More importantly, I was definitely excited to learn and improve myself for benefits in my careers or my daily life in the future.
Another exciting one is about TDSO class. Last week, my classmate and I got another wonderful opportunity to do panel discussion. Actually, I have never done this panel discussion before, but once the teacher assigned us to do this discussion and also gave us some clues about this, we started to discuss with a team that had been divided. It was a great discussion where my team members and I could spend the time to do research and discuss the topic. My team got the topic about “Social Morality “ which had some ideas with this topic, however we need a reference to prove it when discussing. After doing the research, I was getting more ideas and some clue what I was going to talk about and also before doing panel discussion. My team and I were well prepared for this. We did the panel discussion well while a lot of experience has been learned and took it to improve. In fact, it was not easy for us because it was our first time, nonetheless we tried to collect the information that we could and did our best in doing this.
Beside studying, I also participated in a mission with Project B for bike donation. It was not my first anyway, but I still feel touched when seeing a lot of smiles from students, teachers and sponsors. In this mission, I helped the team to prepare the bike before handing it to the students and it was a very exciting experience and also a brilliant opportunity for me as well where I could attend to help out those who need it. On that day, Maria, Helen, Jennie and Deb who sponsored the bikes also joined us as well. They were absolutely delighted with the activity and also got emotional when seeing their support going in the right direction. Nonetheless, I truly appreciate the sponsor who supported those bikes to continue their studies. I could see clearly how those support impacts their education and their life. Throughout this, the students have more passion to continue their studying by seeing our students as a role model and also having better transportation to continue their education. I am more than happy when I could attend these activities to create more impact, positive path for many students and make their life changing.
That is all about me and I have attached a few of my photos. And I hope to hear from you soon.
