RCB Bulletin Thursday 14 November 2024
At last week's meeting VP Ian Stacy did a fine job filling in for
President Donna Wright who was feeling unwell.
Best wishes to her for a speedy recovery.

Our speaker last week was Ian Armstrong OAM who presented an interesting talk on the History of the Melbourne Cup. He brought with him some fine memorabilia of that great event which included a painting of Grand Flaneur (1877–1900) who was an outstanding Australian Thoroughbred racehorse and sire, who won nine successive races, including the AJC Derby, the Victoria Derby and the 1880 Melbourne Cup, before he retired undefeated and also an actual Melbourne Cup which he said he had always wanted to own. He also explained the mystery of the missing Phar Lap Cup and told us how it had been presented 3 times with the names of the winner replaced each time.

It was disappointing that the members of RC Brighton North couldn't attend our meeting as they missed a very interesting night. Hopefully we will get together with them at another event soon.

Reminder that our next meeting is the Club AGM on Thursday
21 November. Members should have already received the Club Financials from Secretary Anthony Langley. Also our exchange student Mariah will be speaking to us about her OZ journey so far.

2. Geoff Cunningham - TeamSports4All
Geoff said that they had concluded the Commonwealth Gov't Safer Communities Grant that we were successful in securing in June 2021 when Jo Kwok (Youth and Vocational) made application with TeamSports4All to assist underprivileged or "at risk" youth to participate in sport. During that period we assisted TS4A roll out programs across a number of Metropolitan LGA's so that over 450 kids were assisted in sport or Rotary camps. This success led to Geoff to introducing the local member of Federal Parliament (Zoe Daniel) to Mike Rickard-Bell from TS4A and they have been successful in obtaining another sizeable 3 year Grant to assist young girls. Geoff said he will arrange for Mike to come along to RCB and do a presentation to wrap up the former Grant and tell us of the new one.
A good news story of.............. joining up the dots!

VP Ian Stacy - Melbourne Cup Trivia Quiz
Ian presented the quiz with candy for prizes for getting it right.
Here are the questions (answers below):
Questions:
1. What distance is the Melbourne cup raced over?

2. What is the prize pool for the Melbourne Cup?
3. What race number is the Melbourne Cup?
4. What horse was the 2023 Melbourne Cup winner?
5. Who is the main sponsor of the Melbourne Cup?
6. Who is the VRC Chairman?
7. What horse won the Melbourne Cup is 1861?
8. What horse has won the Melbourne Cup three times?

Answers:

1. 3200m. The race was originally held over two miles (about 3,218 metres), but following Australia’s adoption of the Metric system in the 1970s the current distance of 3,200 metres was adopted in 1972. This reduced the distance by 61 ft 6 in (18.75 m), and Rain Lover’s 1968 race record of 3min.19.1sec was accordingly adjusted to 3min.17.9sec . The present record holder is the 1990 winner Kingston Rule with a time of 3 min and 16.3 sec.
2. $8,560,000. The 2024 Melbourne Cup is the world’s richest handicap horse race. The famous 18ct solid gold Hardy Brothers trophy is worth $250,000.
The winner of the Cup gets $4.4m of that pool, second place $1.1
and sixth to 12th $160,000.
3. Race 7 at 3.00pm
4. Without a Fight – Damian Zahra
5. Lexus
6. Neil Wilson, Kylie Rogers is the CEO.
7. Archer
8. Makybe Diva 2003, 2004, 2005.

The shortest-priced favourite in Cup history was Phar Lap when he won in 1930 at 8-11 ($1.72).
