RCB Bulletin Thursday 9 November 2023

President’s weekly message

I had lovely notes from speakers Lucy Loko and John Oswald last week – how welcome they were made to feel as well as the interest in and knowledge of Papua New Guinea. Well done Rotary Club of Brighton. I hope you all enjoyed their talk as much as I did. See highlights below.

We also heard from Ed Davies and John Turner from Neighbourhood Watch.
John Turner is on the Committee of the newly established Brighton Neighbourhood Watch (NHW3186). John has been a major supporter of graffiti removal around Hampton and spends most Sunday afternoons voluntarily removing Graffiti from the Hampton shopping precinct. He spoke to the audience about Crime Prevention in Bayside and how we can all do a little bit more in preventing crime such as locking Cars and Houses, and not leaving valuables in sight of opportunists. He also asked for people to become involved in the new NHW3186 which Ed is setting up.

November is supposed to be a quiet time Rotary wise, albeit not for the Bayside Art Show folk who are working really hard in the lead up weeks to the big event. Can you please make sure you are all on the roster list to assist if you haven’t already done so.

The results of the survey on a possible change of meeting night are in – thank you to those who participated. The majority of members would be amenable to a change from Thursday to Tuesday, albeit with some reservations. Please be aware that no decision has yet been on any change, we rather we will use the results will assist the Board with its investigations and deliberations.

I am looking forward to this Thursday as my lovely neighbour Angie Bone has agreed to talk to us. Angie is an Associate Professor of Practice in planetary health at the Monash Sustainable Development Institute, where she focuses on system transformation for health sector resilience and sustainability, behaviour change and planetary health. She is a senior public health physician and former Deputy Chief Health Officer in Victoria. Her talk will include environmental influences on health and health equity.

Hope to see all of you on Thursday. And of course, all the best for picking the winner of the Melbourne Cup.
