Last Thursday evening was memorable night - Issi Dye was really entertaining with great stories about his time in show business. We also handed over a cheque for $12,615 to BayCISS from the Great Bayside Swim 2024, with proceeds for their Educational Support program. Janet Mathieson gave us an update on this great program.
My only concern for the evening was what was happening to Carlton who were playing Melbourne. I admit I may have had a few sneaky looks at my phone during the meeting – just as well no sergeant’s session. Evening finished well with Carlton managing to hang on in the dying seconds of the game – whew!!!
Bayspeak Heat one at Mentone Girls Grammar went well – our own adjudicators took over from Toastmaster this year - Tina O'Donnell, Heather Stacy and David Smyth were excellent, and ably assisted by former Toastmaster member Janet Gray. Most of the student’s talks are outstanding and an absolute pleasure to listen to - they are articulate, researched, with great stories to tell. This year we trialled a small add-on, while the adjudicators were reviewing the results, we asked three students to “volunteer” to give a 2-minute talk on a subject that was given to them with 5 minutes notice. They were so good,
Wednesday was Mock job interviews at Brighton Secondary School. Jo Kwok, James Newbury, Meaghan Nichols, and yours truly were among the volunteers. This is a worth while volunteering activity and high recommended.
Next Thursday
A reminder that next Thursday is a special meeting to be held at the Brighton Baths - where Pres Elect Narina Amvazas will be outlining her plans for the coming Rotary year. Narina clearly understands that society continues to change and Rotary and especially the Rotary Club of Brighton needs to change so it can remain relevant. Our Club simply will not become viable if we continue to operate on our current model - changes are required and are planned. I urge you all to attend to listen to Narina’s message, it’s that important.
That’s it from me, hope to see all of you Thursday week.
