Another action packed evening at last week’s Rotary Club of Brighton meeting. David McGowan, CEO of the Police Veterans Victoria was our guest speaker and provided a lot of interesting insights on how they support members once they leave VICPOL and the lack of government support that they receive.
Brighton Grammar boys, Kenneth and Nicholas joined us to share their experience of winning last year’s Rotary District 9800 MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) and competing at the 2024 National Competition held in Canberra. We wish the boys luck as they are competing in the 2025 District competition on the 24-25 May.
Stuart McIntyre, Chairman of the Great Bayside Swim, presented PresidentSam Dimopoulos of the Brighton Life Saving Club with a cheque for $7,000 which came from funds raised from the Great Bayside Swim 2025.
(thanks to Jo Kwok for report).
Highlights of 1 May Meeting
Secretaries Announcements
presented by Anthony Langley
Apologies: Wendy Davis, Glenys Hitchen, Paul Laband,
PP Des Thomas, PP Norm Thomas,
PP Pat Kearns and PP Keith Cameron.
Anthony Langley:Anthony said that each year our Club makes a donation following the Great Bayside Swim. Proceeds from the Swim are dividedbetween various organisations and charities and one of those organisations that we support is BayCISS with their Education Support Program. This supports education expenses for children in the Bayside area from disadvantaged backgrounds and this year the Board proposed at its February meeting to donate the sum of $15,500 to BayCISS subject to Member approval. Given the amount is $15,500 Anthony said that we are required to obtain a vote at a meeting to support that donation. Anthony then moved that the donation from the Rotary Club of Brighton to the BayCISS Education Support Program for the sum of $15,500 be accepted. A show of hands approved the motion and it was carried.
Jo Kwok:Jo said that each year we do a Bayside Family Christmas Event supporting just over 100 hundred disadvantaged kids and their families and it's a collaborative effort put on by Rotary Club of Brighton, Hampton Rotary, Hampton RSL & Country Women's Association with donations from St Leonards College and it involves Famlife, BayCISS and other disadvantaged people in the local area. She said that they were nominated for the Bayside Council Community Event of the Year Award for this event but unfortunately didn't win but came close and it was very heavily competed. The other item she wanted to mention was that they need volunteers to do mock interviews at Brighton Secondary School with year 10 students and she said a few Members have spoken to her already. She said that if there was anyone who was available on 14 May or 21 May for half a day each she would love to speak to them.
Nicole Chong:Nicole spoke about BaySpeak 2025 and she said they are holding their first heat on Tuesday 6 May and will also be running on Tuesday 13 and 21 May and the Finals are on 3 June at Firbank. She said if anyone is available those nights they are welcome to come along. Please contact Nicole with an enquiries.
