President’s weekly message
Our great speaker on Thursday last week, Colin Heseltine, gave us great insights and was informative and relevant on China, "The Change of Complexity". I also enjoyed the atmosphere, a good turnout, so a huge thank you for all of you that attended. Makes it all worthwhile.
This week will be a Club night with Member Behind the Badge talks which will be given by our President Elect Narina Amvazas and I have persuaded our current President to do that same, so two for the price of one so to speak. In addition, to celebrate the start of the Footy Finals, we are delighted to bring back the old Footy Handball Competition. And we will have some other fun activities.
During the week, Colleen d'Offay sent me an update she received from the student the Club has sponsored in Cambodia. It was such lovely reading I have asked Max to put a copy in the bulletin for everyone to read (see Eam's letter below). Rotary really can make a difference to people’s lives.
President Arthur Hubbard
Pres Arthur also acknowledged
Geoff Bentley's Birthday on
31 August.
PP Keith Cameron for service to Rotary of 31 years on 1 September.
PP Ivan Vojlay for service to Rotary of 28 years on 1 September.
He also mentioned The Big Serve event on Sunday 29 October at Beaumaris Lawn Tennis Club and said as we are running this event we will be need volunteers such as umpires, registration desk people and Ticket sellers.

Stuart McIntyre spoke about GBS (Great Bayside Swim) and said that the sponsor situation is looking very healthy and he said we have two sponsors from our Club again. They are Brighton Travelworld who are on board again and so is Matt Nichols from Nichols Crowder and he thanked them for their support.
Stuart McMillan who wasn't present at the meeting asked for the following be included again for your information:
Stuart spoke recently about the Rotary Club of Brighton 50-year celebrations and Rotary International’s priority No.1. The Rotary Club of Brighton are supporting Rotary International’s number one priority and celebrating our own 50th Birthday by accepting the End Polio challenge.

Polio is on the rise again in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ukraine, Ghana, Liberia,Madagascar, Senegal and Israel, its time for Rotary to mobilise globally and end polio.
To meet the challenge, (RCB) are celebrating their 50th Anniversary by donating$50 per member to the Polio Plus Society. The Polio Plus Society has called on all member nations to donate $150 per member and become Society Members. PolioPlus Society members are registered on your Rotary International (RI) record and you are presented with a globally recognised certificate and pin.
Your club has started the process for you, all you have to do is
1. Log onto your “My Rotary” account, https://my.rotary.org/en/
2. Click on the Donate button (top right),
3. Select End Polio, scroll down to one-time-donation (select)
4. Scroll down to Use your credit card to donate $100 (AUD)
In District 9800 we are the second largest donor, so with your help we can be first;
1. Become Polio Plus Society members
2. Get a 100% tax deduction
3. And help end this global disease
So don’t have that bottle of wine or meal at our regular meeting and give the equivalent to end polio via the Polio Plus Society donation.
If you don’t know your RI membership number ask Anthony Langley.
RCB receives Volunteer Grant from Zoe Daniel's
Grants Committee
On behalf of the Rotary Club of Brighton, Jo Kwok attended the morning tea with Zoe Daniel MP on Friday 1 September and joined a number of members from the Goldstein community whose organisations were successful in receiving a Volunteer Grant. Thanks to Zoe’s Grants Committee and Department of Social Services funding, our Club has received a grant which will go towards much needed equipment that we use at our many community fundraising events such as the Big Serve, Classic Car Show and Great Bayside Swim (previously known as the Great Australia Day Swim). The money raised from these events is then used to support many of these community organisations such as BayCISS, Brighton Life Saving Club, Hampton Highett Community Centre, Bayside Toy Library and Bayside Community Emergency Relief.

It was a great finish at the top. Dee and Susan dominated the top for the last few weeks and Bruce stormed into 3rd in the last round to snatch third.
The Lone 9 eluded us all season.
The Lone 9 Jackpot money will go into the finals tipping pot.
Prize money for the finals will now be:
FINALS -Winner $300 and 2nd $50
GRAND FINAL - Winner $200 and 2nd $50
As the AFL Tipping site does not cover the finals you will need to email me your tips.
Once the weekly draw is known I will email you with the games and the match requiring a margin tip.

Update from a Student we have sponsored in Cambodia
Hello Colleen and the Members of the Rotary Club of Brighton,
How are you doing?
Welcome to the new month, since we haven’t talked for a long time, I also have some wonderful activities to share with you in this month. There are about Bikes donation with Project B, my Education, and A Wonderful workshop with teacher Seyha.
To begin, I would like to share what I have admired and valued the most while I join and contribute with Project B to donate bikes for students. On 15th of August, I went to Reul high school which was located in Pouk district, Siem Reap province. It was a really amazing activity and took a great picture of everyone sharing love to students and providing students the opportunities for their studying. Meanwhile, I was assigned to share some general knowledge with students. In that, I noticed a wonderful impact through sharing which everyone could learn and improve. Students can learn from me and gain more general knowledge to develop their life and improve their thought as well because I was here to inspire and motivate them and be a role model for many students and left an amazing footprint for them. Also, I learned a lot from this workshop while society needed help from youth to get involved to develop. I learned from the love and undescribed impact by sharing. This really touched my heart and was meaningful for me. Importantly, It was not required that till I have money or I was a billionaire that I can help them, however, I helped them with what I can do, spending every value minute and energy to help youth in Cambodia. I could be the inspirational person for many young boys and girls in rural areas to strive for their education. Lastly, I was really grateful to be a Rotaract Active Member to share the love with everyone.
I am excited to share about my current course that I take. I have taken Cost Accounting, Introduction to Computer and Introduction to Economics. Let me share about the Economics class that is taught by a Khmer teacher. It aligns me to know more about the current economy in Cambodia, which is a really interesting subject and helps me to see the wide ideas in economics. More importantly, I acknowledge more about other developing countries as well and I could compare it to other countries as well as Cambodia's opportunity cost to grow the economy. Furthermore, I expand the ideas about trading the products or services that are really essential for me to see the extremely important to grow the economy. Of course, this class really satisfied me a lot to be involved, participation with teacher and other classmates in terms of realizing more and getting more ideas about this important class ever.
Recently, I joined a workshop which was presented by teacher Seyha on the 27th. He had an interesting topic that drew everyone's attention including me as well. He inspired our students by his real experiences that he met himself. He also notified us about the conscious mind and subconscious mind where he reminded me about one book I read since I studied in the IEAP program. It's called THE SECRET and it was the best book. It gives me motivation when I do something to do my best and aim high. In fact, I never thought that I could get an A in University life, however, after reading this empowering book, this changed my thought. I changed from a Negative thinking person to a positive person and believe that I could get an A or I can be the better than I was. I almost 100 percent transformed my thought and myself also grew better follow what I think because I take action for it. Back to teacher Seyha, he shared the best reality about the step of learning as well. I am really admiring him for spending their valuable time to change our student’s mind-set and me as well. After attending this workshop with him, it reminds me to do all my best and take action and do things that are related to my goals every day. I got a power to motivate me. I can be better than I used to think and now "YES" I change myself with a positive thinking and attitude. A short reflection of his class, I do not want to take my eyes away from him even a minute from his inspirational sharing.
I am really excited while writing this to share with you and await to hear from you as well. Have a wonderful day.
Best Regards,
Eam
