LEST WE (and OUR KIDS) FORGET
The RSL Hampton Sub-branch will be hosting an Anzac Day ceremony for Bayside schools, on Friday 20th April 2018 at 11 am. The ceremony will be held at Hampton RSL’s premises at 25 Holyrood Street Hampton. Based on previous year's attendance, there is anticipated to be over 300 students from Hampton, Sandringham, Sandringham East, St Mary’s, Black Rock Primary Schools, Mentone Grammar and St. Leonard’s College at the Bayside School ANZAC Day Ceremony.
The Bayside based Rotary Clubs from both Districts 9800 and 9810 are working together jointly on the School Service - members from Brighton, Brighton North, Hampton, Beaumaris and Sandringham have kindly volunteered to support and assist with the event. Brighton Rotary Member Dr John Basarin OAM, has been the originator of this project and involved with this fabulous community initiative since inception and is again looking forward to a number of volunteers joining him from each of the Clubs.
St Leonard’s College will provide a 120 strong band and choir ensemble to accompany the event. Mentone Grammar’s Army Cadet Unit will provide the catafalque party. There will be a poetry competition in the participating schools, focussing on the topic of “Anzac Day & Peace”. The winners of this competition from each school will undertake a reading of their poem at the ceremony.
The ceremony will also be attended by several diggers, Legacy widows, Mayor Laurie Evans of Bayside City Council, Chairman of Order of Australia Association- South Central Branch, Mr Ross Newton OAM, District Governors of Rotary Districts 9800 and 9810 and Tim Wilson MP, Member for Goldstein.
The ceremony which was first held in 2016 will promote the recognition of Anzac Day by young people in schools in Bayside. The President of the Hampton RSL, Mr Peter Lanigan said: “It is believed that this ceremony will enhance the students’ understanding of significance and meaning of Anzac Day, by participating at an event specifically designed for them. The outcome for this Anzac Day project will benefit local schools, students and the greater community”.
